Prep Roundup: Titans sweep Gaylord in BNC opener

TRAVERSE CITY — Paul Soma and Chase Cavric pitched Traverse City West to a 2-1 and 6-3 Big North Conference sweep of Gaylord on Wednesday that opened league play.

Soma tossed a three-hit complete game in the opener, striking out four. Wes Talbot had two hits and two runs in that game.

Cavric whiffed five and surrendered just two hits in six innings in the second contest. Jake Dean closed it out with a scoreless inning. Leading hitters for West were Jared Roth (two hits, two RBIs), Jake Newhouse (two hits) and Nick Brzezinski (double).

The Titans (8-2, 2-0 BNC) travel today to Ogemaw Heights.


TC Central 6 2

Petoskey 5 2

Josiah Lopez-Wild drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to give Traverse City Central a 6-5 Big North Conference win over Petoskey.

Cooper Marshall led the Trojans (5-3-1) with four hits, including two doubles. Logan Briggs added two hits. Ethan Campbell pitched a strong six innings for Central.

The teams tied 2-2 in the nightcap. Josh Endres drove in the two Trojan runs. Ron Dohm went seven innings on the mound.

Central hosts East Jordan today.

St. Francis 14 9

Kalkaska 0 5

Tyler Waslawski pitched a one-hitter as St. Francis beat Kalkaska 14-0 in the opener of a Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader.

Waslawski and Jim Smith each drove in four runs. Smith and Gabe Callery pounded out two hits.

The Gladiators (4-1) won the nightcap 9-5 as Matt Seybert pitched a complete game. Smith drove in two runs while Joe Studzinski and Jake Duell collected two hits.

St. Francis competes in a tournament at Michigan Center on Saturday.

Glen Lake 5 8

Bellaire 8 2

Bellaire and Glen Lake split a non-league doubleheader.

Bellaire won the opener 8-5, Glen Lake the nightcap 8-2.

Thomas Waning earned the win in relief in game two. Travis Moore collected two hits and three RBIs for the Lakers (6-1). Trevor Apsey added two hits and an RBI. In the opener, Apsey had three hits and two RBI and Moore and Ben Schweikart two hits.
