Kids free fishing event canceled

TRAVERSE CITY — The annual Kids Free Fishing Day event, usually scheduled over Father’s Day weekend, will be taking a year off.

Due to the construction of a new harbor at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Campus and limitations of other public access sites, the event will take a year hiatus and is expected to return in June 2015.

Longboarding event coming to Onekama

ONEKAMA — The hills just north of Onekama will host Rage At The Ridge on April 26-27 on Smith Road, turning into a 0.7-mile descent for amateur and professional skateboarders.

The events start with practice runs at 11:30 a.m. April 26. Sunday’s events include practice runs at 10 a.m., followed by three different categories of racing starting with women’s race at 11 a.m., luge at 12:30 p.m. and the open/pro races at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held at 5 p.m.

3 area shooters honored by BCAM

MANCELONA — Three area players were included on the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan’s “Top Shooters” list for the 2013-14 season.

Mancelona’s Brandon Dingman was fifth in 3-point percentage at 55.26 percent, making 42 of 76 shots from behind the arc. Boyne City’s Cole Butler was one spot back in sixth, hitting on 54 percent (27 of 50).

Boyne Falls’ Marcus Matelski was eighth in the state in free-throw shooting at 86.14 percent (87 of 101).
