Werkmeister leads, TC’s Chapman 1 back

MUSKEGON — Tom Werkmeister is at it again.

The 45-year-old salesman from Kentwood, who last week was the first amateur to win the Michigan Open in 38 years, made an eagle-3 on the par 5 18th hole at Muskegon Country Club Tuesday to claim the first-round lead in the 102nd Michigan Amateur Championship.

His 2-under-par 70 in the winds off Lake Michigan gave him a one-shot lead on four golfers heading into Wednesday’s second and final round of stroke play that will determine the 64 golfers who start match play on Thursday. Single-elimination matches through Saturday will determine a champion.

Those who shot 71 included Traverse City’s Andrew Chapman.

Another Traverse City golfer, Patrick Colburn, is three shots back at 73.
