Amateur may win Michigan Open

WASHINGTON, Mich. — It hasn’t been done since 1975.

But Tom Werkmeister is on the verge.

Werkmeister shot a 5-under-par 67 Wednesday to take a one-stroke into today’s final of the Michigan Open. He is trying to become the first amateur to win the Open since Bob Ackerman in 1975.

Werkmeister is at 13-under 203.

“It would mean everything to me to win the Michigan Open,” the 45-year-old Werkmeister, an internet salesman, said.

Defending champion Barrett Kelpin shot 66 to close to within one shot at The Orchards Golf Club. Kelpin, 23, was making his professional debut when he won a year ago.

Muskegon’s Andy Ruthkoski, the 2007 Michigan Open champion and a co-leader after two rounds with Werkmeister, shot 73 to fall six shots off the lead at 209. He’s tied with Christopher Mory, who shot 68.

Lee Houtemann of Manitou Passage Golf Club is at 3-under 213, six-time champion Scott Hebert of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is at 2-under 214 while Traverse City’s Patrick Colburn is at 1-under 215.
