TC's Lockwood's skills translate to water

TRAVERSE CITY — Lili Lockwood is proving to be just as adept skiing on water as she is on snow.

The 16-year-old Traverse City Central junior won the girls 14-18 age class in slalom Saturday in the Michigan Water Ski State Championships on Lake Jepawhit.

Lockwood will now advance to the regionals this weekend in Minnesota.

“I’ve been doing fewer events this year and focusing more on training,” Lockwood said. “All the competitions are downstate. That’s a long way to go, so I only go to the major ones.”

Lockwood helped Traverse City West win a state downhill ski title as a freshman.

“They really correspond, the two sports,” she said.

Lockwood trains on Cedar Lake in the early morning hours, then heads to the gym for dry land training.

“I’m still training for snow skiing,” she said.

In fact, after the regionals this weekend, she’ll travel to Oregon to downhill ski at Mount Hood.

Lockwood transferred to Central last year and was ineligible to compete. Although the defending Division 1 state champions lose some top skiers, the Trojans should be in the hunt again next winter.

“I think we’ll have a solid team,” she said.
