Cooper leaving Bums after Aug. 5

TRAVERSE CITY — Chad Cooper, the play-by-play voice of the Traverse City Beach Bums, will be leaving his position as director of broadcasting following the conclusion of the game Aug. 5 at Lake Erie.

Cooper, who has been with the Beach Bums for four seasons, is taking a job in New York. Joe Brand will replace Cooper as the Beach Bums play-by-play announcer.

Elk Rapids alumni game tonight

ELK RAPIDS — The annual Elk Rapids women’s soccer alumni game will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids High School soccer field.

Current or former Elk Rapids soccer players are welcome to play. The cost is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Any profit will go to support the Elk Rapids women’s soccer program. For more information, contact coach Andrea Krakow at 392-4900 or at graybroc@elkrapidsnet.com.

Trifecta returns to Crystal Mountain

THOMPSONVILLE — The second annual Crystal Trifecta Downhill Mountain Bike Race Series begins Aug. 17 with the first of three races.

There will be a course preview at 11 a.m. with racing at noon.

The race series pits riders 13 and older against trails carved out of the woods, hills, and ski runs at Crystal Mountain. Each of the three races is on a different downhill trail, each a challenging mix of tight turns, steeps, and jumps.

The second race in the Trifecta will be Sept. 14 with the third and final race Oct. 19 — the same day as Crystal’s Peak 2 Peak Mountain Bike Classic.

Registration for each race is $20 or $50 for the three-race series. To register, riders can call 1-800-968-7686, extension. 7500.

Evans sets record in bike tour

GRAYLING — Flint’s Chris Evans, riding in the recumbent class, set a course record Sunday in winning the Black Bear Bicycle Tour.

The 100-mile Tour follows the participants in the AuSable River Canoe Marathon from Grayling to Oscoda.
