131s capture baseball invite
TRAVERSE CITY — The 131s 16U baseball team won this weekend’s TC Fast Invitational finishing 5-1.
The team (19-5), which is made up of players from Petoskey, Mancelona, Frankfort and Traverse City, had two runner-up finishes to go with the Fast Invitational championship this summer. They also advanced to the quarterfinals of a tournament at Michigan State.
The 131s won the title by posting a 4-1 win over the Gennesee County Thunder, a team that had mercied the 131s in a four-inning game on Friday — the team’s only loss of the tournament. In Sunday’s semifinal game the 131s held on to edge the host TC Fast team 3-1, which nearly rallied in the seventh inning but fell short with the bases loaded. For the weekend Max Ludka contributed nine hits while Jimmy Smith and Cooper Marshall had five hits each. Winning pitchers were Paul Soma, Max Ludka, Cooper Marshall and Keegan Kenny. Stellar defense was played by Joe Studzinski and RJ Kennis.
Next up for the 131s is their final tournament this weekend at Alma College and Central Michigan. The team is coached by Tim Frankhouse and Kevin Kranz.
