Prep Sports Roundup: Traverse City West tops Gaylord

---- — GAYLORD — Traverse City West won a share of the Big North Conference girls soccer title on Thursday after defeating Gaylord 4-0 in the regular season finale.

Maria Rapson had a hat trick and Jayna Brunetti added another goal as West improved to 12-5-4 overall and 8-1-3 in the Big North. Cadillac, which beat Ogemaw Heights 8-0, shared the crown with the Titans.

West led the game 2-0 at the half.

Jessica Kalbfleisch had three assists and Julie Rapson added an assist.

Sharing goalkeeper duties were Savannah Wojtanowski and Maggie Troost, totaling nine saves.

The Titans are awaiting the winner of the Alpena-TC Central game to open district play on Thursday.

In the JV game West won 2-1. Ellie Taplin and Grace Boudjalis scored for West (9-4-3). Sarah VanSipe and Mary-Kate Rose assisted on the goals. In goal were Brittany Sanderson and Kaylie Camp.


TC Central 2

Petoskey 1

The Traverse City Central girls soccer team finished tied for fourth in the Big North Conference after downing Petoskey 2-1 for the Trojans’ season-best third win in a row.

Paige Pfannenstiel scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Jalyna Cisneros with eight minutes remaining. Cisneros also assisted on the first Central goal, which was scored by Kalina Pfannenstiel. Petoskey tied the game before the half.

Katie Wheeler was in goal. The Trojans’ defense was led by Lindsey Round and Cassidy Klein.

Central (9-11-1, 6-5-1 Big North) opens postseason play on Tuesday at Alpena.

Central (7-7-2) won the JV game 2-1. Jennifer Rose had both of Central’s goals, with assists going to Julianna Chang and Maitland Adams. Carrie Wynkoop made five saves.

Grayling 3

Boyne City 0

Hannah Haven scored a pair of goals to lead Grayling past Boyne City 3-0 in Lake Michigan girls soccer.

Megan Beard also netted a goal for the Vikings (12-7). Laura Simpson made three saves to get the shutout.

Grayling hosts Cheboygan for district play on Tuesday.

Elk Rapids 8

Kalkaska 0

Hailey Patterson scored two goals and was one of seven Elk Rapids player to find the back of the net as the Elks beat Kalkaska 8-0 in a girls soccer game that ended because of mercy with just under eight minutes to play.

Marisa Rogers, Nicole Hill, Mylia LaPointe, Michelle Costa, Macey Stites and Selina Shananaquet also tallied in the win. Paige Granger didn’t face any shots on goal.

The Elks, who led 5-0 at the half, host Roscommon on Tuesday to start district action.


Suttons Bay 3 12

Suttons Bay got a tuneup for today’s huge doubleheader for the conference championship against Glen Lake by taking a pair of games against Evart, 3-0 and 12-5.

Robby Walters allowed three hits, fanned five and walked one to get the shutout win. At the plate Aaron Orban and Zach Rice each had two hits. Martin Stowe had two RBIs and a double and Jake Kiessel had an RBI double.

In game two Stowe got the pitching win with six hits allowed, seven strikeouts and walked one. He also had three hits and an RBI. Other top hitters for the Norsemen were Logan Mikesell with four hits, Rice with two hits and three RBIs, Orban with two hits and two RBIs, and Casey Cross with an RBI hit.

The Norsemen (19-6-1) can win the Northwest Conference title outright with a sweep over the Lakers today in Suttons Bay.

LL St. Mary’s 9 5

Manistee Catholic Central 3 2

Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s came from behind in each game to sweep a baseball doubleheader from Manistee Catholic Central, 9-3 and 5-2.

The Eagles (11-11-2) trailed early in each contest after Catholic Central belted two-run homers in the first inning. Ben Feliczak had the Sabers homer in game one and Mason Clark slugged his homer in game two.

Jack Garthe regrouped to get the win in the opener, striking out 10 and allowing six hits. John Van Raalte had four strikeouts and scattered seven hits to win the second game. Offensively for St. Mary, Nate Schwarz had three hits and four RBIs and Christian Doran had three hits and two RBIs in game one. VanRaalte had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs in game two, and Garthe had two hits and two RBIs.


TC West wins Petoskey Invite

TC West had the top three individual finishers on the way to taking first overall at the Petoskey Invitational golf tournament.

Payden Myers, Cam Murray and Alex Scott went 1-2-3 as the Titans shot a winning team score of 299. Myers carded a 71 to earn medalist honors, followed by Murray’s 72 and Scott’s 75. Keits Shoemaker rounded out the West scorers with an 81. The Titans swept firsts in each Big North match this season.

TC Central shot a 323 and tied for second with Cadillac. The Trojans ended up winning the second tiebreaker, which was each team’s sixth player’s score, to claim second. Winton Munch took top honors for the Trojans, and was fifth overall, with a 77. Trey Pezzetti was eighth overall with a 79. Abe Lewis shot an 82 and Daniel Brott had an 85. Derek Schrank shot an 87 and Riley Boyd had an 87 as the determining tiebreaker, with his round five strokes better than the No. 6 player from Cadillac.

West’s junior varsity won the JV meet with a 345. Ryan Sievers had an 81, Zach Perrin an 83, Seth Perrin an 88 and Tanner Hewitt a 93. Central’s JV team finished fifth. Matt Wooten and Brandon Smith led the way with 95s, Jackson McKay had a 98, Zach Egbert came in with a 105, Jack Hawley had a 106 and David Chauvette ended with a 108.

Ogemaw Heights tied Gaylord for fourth with a 327 and Petoskey was sixth with a 335.


Manistee Catholic Central 13 13

LL St. Mary’s 5 4

Manistee Catholic Central swept a softball doubleheader from Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s, 13-5 and 13-4.

Amber Robke struck out two to get the win in game one. Haley Doyle led the Sabers with two hits and four RBIs. Hannah Janicki and Alicia each added two hits. Megan Popp led St. Mary’s with three hits and Abby Thon added two hits. Popp took the loss with seven strikeouts and one walk.

In the second game Heck had three hits and four RBIs, Janicki had three hits and three RBIs and Shelby Pates had two hits. Pates also picked up the pitching win. Mary Rexroat took the loss, striking out one and walking three. Popp had two hits and two RBIs and Anna Perkette had two hits as well.

St. Mary (21-10) is at Bear Lake on Tuesday.

Evart 24 9

Suttons Bay 8 19

Jessica Hunt, Kendall Schaub, Veronica Anderson and Caylie Pattison each collected three hits as Suttons Bay defeated Evart 19-9 in the second game of a softball doubleheader. Evart took the opener 24-8.

Hunt had two triples among her three hits in the second game for the Norse. In game one Carla Rivera had three hits and two RBIs, Pattison had two hits and two RBIs and Beedoskah Stonefish had two hits.
