Homecoming of sorts for ex-Bum Morrow

TRAVERSE CITY — It was a good homecoming of sorts for Bryce Morrow.

Wednesday’s rain-out allowed him to hang around with former college roommate Jake Sabol, who was the winning pitcher in Traverse City’s 10-0 win Tuesday.

“Good to see him,” said Morrow, who picked up his first win of the season in Evansville’s 6-5 win over Traverse City in the first game in a Thursday doubleheader sweep. “I hung out with him a bit. It’s fun to come see those guys, and then once it’s game time, you kind of bear down and you’re not friends and then you’re friends again after the game.”

Only a few of the players he faced were the same as when Morrow played in Traverse City in 2011.

“(Chase) Burch and (Jose) Vargas and (Sean Gusrang) were here,” Morrow said. “I didn’t really see Goose play much, but he’s turned into a great player. Burch and Vargas are always tough outs.”

OTTERS LOSE SLUGGER: Evansville first baseman Andrew Clark was signed by the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday as the team’s game was rained out.

Clark was leading the Frontier League in hitting at .643 with a team-high four doubles and four runs

batted in.

With Clark soon to drop from the league batting leaders due to lack of at-bats, that would put Traverse City’s Scott Woodward in the lead. Through four games, Woodward was hitting .500.

WEATHER OR NOT: The attendance was sparse to start Thursday’s games, likely partially due to the cold weather snap and an early 5 p.m. doubleheader start due to Wednesday’s rainout. There were approximately only 40 fans in attendance for the singing of the national anthem before the first contest.

Tuesday’s game had just 1,873 fans in attendance, a low number in comparison to previous home openers. But the weather forecast called for rain, which was persistent early in the game and came back again later before it was called in the eighth due to heavy fog.
