Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Clinging to a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth inning, the Traverse City Beach Bums scored 10 unanswered runs over the last four innings as they walloped Evansville 13-2 on Tuesday.
Part of Traverse City’s surge in the last half of the game was a four-run sixth and a five-run seventh that put the game away.
The Beach Bums collected nine hits, but also were helped by eight walks issued by Evansville pitchers and three errors charged to the Otters.
Scott Dunn improved to 11-0 as he went six innings, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out seven. Matt Miller finished the game for Traverse City, allowing only two hits in three shutout innings.
Carlo Testa had a double, a home run and three RBIs, Scott Woodward added two hits, and Jeremy Banks had one hit and drove in three runs. Testa’s homer was followed by a homer from Zach Kometani — the biggest blows of the five-run seventh.
Evansville starter Jose Velez (0-1) took the loss. His 2.1 innings pitched were the most of any of the seven pitchers the Otters used.
The Beach Bums (35-21) took a 3-0 lead in the first, with all three runs being unearned. Seven of Traverse City’s runs were unearned, including all four it scored in the sixth.
Ricardo Lizcano had two hits for Evansville (27-28).
The victory was Traverse City’s fourth straight and increased their lead in the East Division to three games over Florence. The Beach Bums complete the three-game series against the Otters tonight as they send Johnny Omahen (4-5) to the mound to face Evansville’s Matt Zielinski (6-3). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
