EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Evansville pitcher Chad James threw the first no-hitter in Otters franchise history on Wednesday as Evansville defeated Traverse City 10-0 in a seven-inning contest that opened a doubleheader.
James (4-2) walked just four and struck out 14 in the victory, as eight of the nine Traverse City hitters he faced struck out in the game.
The Otters gave James all he needed offensively in the first inning, scoring five runs off Traverse City starter Alex Phillips, who was pulled after one inning of work. Phillips allowed five hits, walked one and struck out one. Scott Vachon (3 innings) and Cameron Giannini (2 innings) finished up the game for the Beach Bums, who had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
James didn’t allow a baserunner until Chris Cowell was issed a two-out walk in the third inning. James followed with walks to Jovan Rosa in the fourth, Rob Benedict in the fifth and Josh Miller in the seventh, but those were the only players to reach base for Traverse City (19-28).
Shayne Houck blasted a three-run homer for Evansville and Chris Sweeney went 3-for-5, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Josh Allen was 3-for-5 and Phillip Wilson went 3-for-4 for the Otters (27-18), who trail Washington by one game for first place in the East Division.
The second game of the twinbill was not completed by press time. The two teams end their three-game series tonight.
