Red Wings prospects in town for camp

TRAVERSE CITY — Some of the Detroit Red Wings top prospects will take part in the team’s Development and Conditioning Camp, which starts Friday morning at Centre ICE.

The prospects will include Detroit’s last two No. 1 draft picks, winger Anthony Mantha and center Dylan Larkin.

The 19-year-old Mantha is ranked the team’s No. 1 prospect, according to Red Wings Central. The 6-5 forward was the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s MVP last season after totaling 57 goals and 63 assists in 57 games. It’s expected he’ll start his professional career this season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League, although a strong showing in training camp and exhibitions could make it a more difficult decision for the Wings.

Larkin was selected 15th overall in last week’s draft. He’s bound for the University of Michigan after playing for the U.S. development program’s under-18 team. Larkin is one of five picks from last week’s draft that will be here. The others include Dominic Turgeon, Christoffer Ehn, Julius Vahatalo and Axel Holmstrom.

Three other top 10 prospects, as ranked by Red Wings Central, will take part — defenseman Alexey Marchenko, an AHL All-Star last season, and forwards Andreas Athanasiou and Tomas Nosek.

In all, 44 players will participate. They will be divided into two groups for practices and scrimmages, which run through Tuesday. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public. Admission is $5 each day.

Practice times on Friday are 10-11 a.m. for Team Yzerman and 11 a.m. to noon for Team Lidstrom. Both teams will practice from 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday and then scrimmage at 3 p.m. The two teams will practice and go through skills and skating drills, starting at 9 a.m., Sunday and Monday. There will be an 11 a.m. scrimmage Tuesday to wrap it up.
