Bandrowski wins two tennis titles

TRAVERSE CITY — Florida’s Eric Poland defeated Traverse City’s Jack Seymour 6-2, 6-2 to win the boys 18 division in the Cherry Festival Kickoff tennis tournament.

Traverse City’s Amanda Bandrowski captured the girls 18 title with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Grace Richards of Wheaton, Ill.

Seymour claimed the boys 16 division with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over East Lansing’s Grant Williams. Traverse City’s Hayden McNamara downed Traverse City’s Andrew Gerling 6-2, 6-2 in the boys 14 finals. Midland’s Tom Wood took the boys 12 class with a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 win over Nick Sommerfield.

In addition to winning girls 18, Bandrowski took the girls 16 division with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Birmingham’s Sophie Balardo. Midland’s Meghan Killmaster downed Ohio’s Madison Arquette 6-1, 6-2 to claim girls 14. Ohio’s Gemma Smith topped Traverse City’s Sophie Jacks 6-2, 6-2 in the girls 12 finals.

Only one doubles champion was crowned because of the weather. Carson Bourdo and Sommerfield captured the boys 14 division with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nick Haines and Tom Pettinato.

Meanwhile, the Grand Traverse Tennis Camps announced its camp champs for the first two-week sessions. Honors went to Drew Humphrey and Carson Boudro in the morning session and Amelia Shotwell and Natalie Bourdo in the afternoon session.

Sommerfield won the Excellence Award in the Junior Excellence camp. Haines took the Varsity Award in the high school team camp.

 

Pop Warner camp set for July 14-16

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Youth Football/YMCA Pop Warner Skills Camp will be held July 14-16 at the Civic Center.

The cost is $ 45 per player. The camp, for players in grades 3-8, will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Registration deadline is July 10. The camp is for kids who want to learn the basic fundamentals of football or to improve their skills. New and returning youth football players are welcome.
