Bums lose slugfest to Rascals

TRAVERSE CITY — The hitters were in charge Tuesday night at Wuerfel Park.

The River City Rascals and Traverse City Beach Bums combined for 23 runs, 30 hits and 18 walks in a near four-hour Frontier League marathon. The end result? A 12-11 Rascals win.

River City (24-16) scored all 12 of its runs in the first five innings, erasing a 7-3 deficit with four runs in the fourth, then surging to a 12-7 advantage with five in the fifth.

The Beach Bums (15-25) scored three in the bottom of the fifth to pull within two at 12-10. It stayed that way until the ninth when Jeff DeBlieux singled in a run. Traverse City had runners on second and third with two out before Gabriel Shaw — the sixth Rascals pitcher — retired Jovan Rosa on a fly to right to end it.

River City pounded out 15 of its 16 hits in the first five frames, roughing up starter Rusty Shellhorn (six runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings) and relievers Ryan Brasser (four runs on five hits in one inning) and Cameron Giannini (two runs on two hits and three walks in a third of an inning).

Rascals starter Trev Lambert was tagged as well, surrendering seven runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings.

River City’s middle of the lineup did the most damage as catcher Josh Ludy, first baseman Saxton Butler and third baseman Taylor Ard all collected three hits. Ludy, who came into the game hitting .366, drove in three runs and scored three runs. He hit his 14th homer of the season in the first. Ard added a solo shot in the fourth that tied it at 7-7.

The Beach Bums had six players with two hits apiece — Greg Harisis, DeBlieux, Yazy Arbelo, Josh Miller, Sean Gusrang and Rob Benedict. Arbelo belted a two-run homer in the first. DeBlieux drove in four runs on a sacrifice fly in the second, a two-run single in the fifth and his RBI single in the ninth.

In addition to the 18 walks in the game, the pitchers combined for six wild pitches.
