MARION, Ill. — Traverse City dropped its third straight game as the Southern Illinois Miners notched a 6-5 Frontier League victory Friday.
Steve Marino’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly gave the Miners (21-16) a 6-5 lead.
The Beach Bums (14-23) loaded the bases in the ninth on singles by Yazy Arbelo and George Barber and a hit by pitch from Kevin Taylor before Derrick Miramontes struck out the final two batters to preserve the win and pick up his ninth save.
The teams were tied 5-5 after four innings.
Arbelo drove in Greg Harisis with an RBI single in the fourth and Rob Benedict plated Harisis with a first-inning RBI single.
Southern Illinois took a brief lead in the second inning as former Beach Bum outfielder Matt Howard had an RBI double and catcher Phil Butler launched a two-run homer.
In the third, Arbelo and Jake Rhodes each had RBI singles and Josh Miller brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Traverse City starter Tanner Tripp lasted five innings, giving up seven hits, two walks and five runs. He struck out two. Ryan Brasser walked two and surrendered a run in 1.1 innings.
Miners all-star pitcher Tyler Lavigne exited after only two frames, giving up four hits, four walks and four runs. Matt Crim came on to allow one run in four innings, striking out six.
In tonight’s contest, Traverse City’s Casey Delgado (5-1, 2.64) faces off with Southern Illinois left-hander Rick Teasley (4-0, 2.42).
