LOVES PARK, Ill. — The Traverse City Beach Bums had as many errors as hits, four each, as they fell 7-2 to the Rockford Aviators in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday night.
Traverse City struggled in the field and it allowed the Aviators to plate all seven of their runs in the first four innings of a shortened seven-inning game.
Rockford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, and after Traverse City scored twice in the top of the third to pull within a run, the Aviators added two more runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.
Jacob Clem (5-5) didn’t get much help from his defense, but Clem also allowed seven runs — six earned — while giving up 11 hits in four innings. Ben Rawding worked two innings of relief and gave up only one hit.
Chase Burch, Carlo Testa, Jose Vargas and Taylor Wrenn had Traverse City’s hits, with Burch delivering a two-run double in the third that brought home Vargas and Wrenn.
The Beach Bums (36-23) were to play the second game of the doubleheader Saturday night, then turn around and drive back to Traverse City for tonight’s 5:05 p.m. game against Florence.
