Kometani's grand slam sets pace for Bums

NORMAL, Ill. — Zach Kometani started things off quickly for Traverse, and the Beach Bums didn’t look back.

Kometani belted a first-inning grand slam to stake Johnny Omahen to an early 4-0 lead as the Beach Bums routed Joliet 9-3 Saturday night. The victory gave the Bums nine wins on their last 10 games.

Omahen (2-3) went five innings, striking out four and allowing five hits and one walk, winning back-to-back starts after starting the season 0-3.

Jose Vargas, Sean Gusrang and Kometani each had two hits as Traverse City led 7-0 before Normal finally got on the board in the third inning. In the third, Carlo Testa scored on an error and Gurang doubled in two runs.

Vargas slammed a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 9-3, and both bullpens would dominate the rest of the way.

Normal’s Michael Schweiss came on for five innings of scoreless work, while TC’s Chris Squires and Matt Miller each tosses two scoreless innings. Miller fanned three.

Traverse City had only seven hits on the day — D’Marcus Ingram had the other — but the Bums walked eight times, led by three from lead-off hitter Ryan Still. Testa drew two bases on balls. Normal also committed three errors — all in the first three innings.
