Traverse City Record-Eagle
---- — WASHINGTON, Pa. — Zach Kometani ripped a three-run double in the first and Carlo Testa smacked a two-run homer in the seventh as the red-hot Traverse City Beach Bums routed the Washington Wild Things 9-0 in a Frontier League game.
The win stretched Traverse City’s win streak to seven.
Scott Dunn improved to 6-0, tossing 6 1-3 innings of shutout ball. Matt Miller and Jason Mattila pitched hitless relief to preserve the shutout.
The Beach Bums had just six hits. They only had one hit in the first when they pushed across four runs, three on Kometani’s double.
After Testa’s two-run homer in the seventh, Traverse City scored three more times in the eighth, again on just one hit. A Jose Vargas double accounted for one of the runs. The Beach Bums benefitted from two Washington errors, seven walks and two hit batters.
One of the hit batters, Taylor Wrenn, was plunked in the first inning and was subsequently replaced. Wrenn started the game with a 21-game hitting streak — that stayed alive.
According to the MLB rule book, a consecutive-game hitting streak can not be terminated if all the player’s plate appearances (one or more) results in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt.
The two teams conclude their three-game set tonight with Mike Devine (0-1, 4.95) pitching for Traverse City and Shawn Smith (3-1, 2.35) for Washington.
