ITHACA — Glen Lake had Ithaca trailing for the first time all season.
That didn’t last long enough, as the Yellowjackets bounced back to notch a 42-7 district final win over the Lakers to give Ithaca 53 consecutive football victories.
Glen Lake (9-2) went up 7-0 on Trevor Apsey’s 3-yard run 2:53 into the game. The Lakers’ defense forced a Yellowjacket first-possession punt that was snapped over the punter’s head, setting up Glen Lake at the 21. A penalty and four Apsey runs later, Ithaca found itself behind for the first time this year.
Ithaca (11-0) responded with an eight-play, 57-yard drive to even things up 7-7 on a Travis Smith 12-yard touchdown pass to Logan Hessbrook.
Smith tossed a 7-yard TD pass to his brother Jake for a 14-7 halftime lead. Glen Lake had a chance to tie it up before the intermission, but Hessbrook picked off a pass in the end zone.
Ithaca went up 21-0 early in the third quarter after a Jace Demenov interception resulted in a Travis Smith 3-yard quarterback keeper.
Eli Villalobos had a 47-yard punt return for a touchdown and Bryan Shaw and Dallas Reeser added TD runs of 40 and 34 yards to close out the scoring.
The three-time defending Division 6 state champions had a 244-90 advantage in passing yards, although Glen Lake ran for 59 more yards, 159-100.
Carter Lee ran for 96 yards on 11 carries and Apsey had 53 yards on the ground, another 54 on two catches and led the defense with 11 tackles. Lee and Thomas Waning added six tackles each.
