SUTTONS BAY — Leland defeated Charlevoix 25-18, 25-18 Saturday to win the Suttons Bay Volleyball Invitational.
“It was a nice win, especially for our four seniors since this was their last regular season tournament,” Comets coach Laurie Glass said.
Leland trailed the Rayders 7-0 in the second match.
“We never lost our focus,” Glass said.
In pool play, Leland beat Charlevoix 25-18, 25-21; lost to Rogers City 18-25, 20-25; and beat Traverse City Christian 25-13, 25-8.
In the quarterfinals, the Comets topped Houghton Lake 25-17, 25-17. They upended Suttons Bay 25-16, 25-21 in the semifinals.
Leading the way: Noa Yaakoby (five kills, nine aces, 30 digs), Caitlin McKee (seven aces, 101 assists, 23 digs), Felicia Whittaker (23 kills, three aces, five blocks), Whitney Schaub (eight aces, 50 digs), Maddie Trumbull (14 kills, two blocks), Heather Burns (14 kills, two aces, 27 digs) and Miranda Harrison (six aces, 27 digs).
Kingsley (36-6-5) lost in the quarterfinals to Charlevoix 13-25, 24-26. In pool play, Kingsley beat Northport 25-11, 25-14, edged Pellston 25-20, 23-25, 15-9; and beat Houghton Lake 25-9, 25-22.
Kingsley was paced by Lilly Travis (35 kills, 37 digs), Leah Hall (16 kills, 76 assists, 26 digs, 100 percent serving), Alysia Folkersma (17 kills, five blocks, five aces), Autumn Goggin (14 kills, 35 digs, four aces), Kelsey Graham (seven kills, six blocks), Lindsey Weber (36 assists, 100 percent serving) and Arianna Hart (25 digs, 100 percent serving).
West wins bronze at East Kentwood
Traverse City West captured the bronze bracket in the East Kentwood Invitational.
The Titans (29-8-1) opened with a 15-25, 19-25 loss to Forest Hills Northern, then came back to beat Caledonia 25-19, 25-12; Holland Christian 25-8, 25-18; Delton-Kellogg 25-13, 25-10 and Whitehall 25-19, 25-20.
Katie Placek (56 kills, 35 digs, six aces, five blocks), Anna O’Hara (31 kills, eight aces), Kimmy Bilinski (18 digs), Madison Mokanyk (90 assists, 17 digs, 13 aces) and Ally Peters (31 digs) led the Titans, who face Cadillac on Wednesday in a Big North Conference showdown.
West JV beats Central in tournament final
The Traverse City West JV beat Traverse City Central in three games to claim its own invitational.
The Titans beat Leland and Benzie in pool play, then downed St. Francis in the semifinals. Sarah Patten and Makenna Mattson led West.
Pfannenstiel rallies to win invitational
Traverse City Central junior Kalina Pfannenstiel rallied in the final mile to win the girls race in the Traverse City Central Invitational.
Pfannenstiel passed Cheboygan’s Mandy Paull to claim the race in 20:09.68. Paull was second in 20:19.75.
“That’s a decent time on that course,” Central coach Lisa Taylor said of Pfannenstiel’s 20:09.68.
Mason County Central’s Zac Benham won the boys race in 16:35.77. Teammate Chase Barnett, coming off an injury, was second in 17:06.54.
Benham’s time set a 10th grade record at the invitational — one of four records on the day. Traverse City East’s Sielle Kearney broke the girls eighth grade 3200 mark with a time of 11:55.89. Teammate Paige Carrigan, who finished second, also came in ahead of the previous record in 12:07.50. Braiden Voss set a new mark in the boys sixth grade 1600 race in 5:39.07. East’s Leah Socks established a new record in the girls sixth grade race in 5:37.91.
