MUSKEGON — Traverse City Central’s Brad Wozniak advanced to the Division 1 state bowling semifinals before bowing out of the individual tournament.
The Trojans’ junior emerged with the top score of 1,274 after a six-game qualifying block in which his top score was a 268 in the very first game. After a 169, he bounced back with games of 212, 202, 206 and 217 to win qualifying by two pins.
In the round of 16, he defeated Westland John Glenn’s Steve White 422-333 (261-161, 158-175), and then topped Howell’s Jack Herndell 342-327 (196-146, 147-180) before falling nine pins short against Chippewa Valley’s Jeff Piertryka 377-368 (192-185, 203-165).
Wozniak was the final qualifier in the regional at Grand Haven.
The area’s only other player to emerge from the qualifying round was Cheboygan senior Gabby LaVigne, who placed seventh in qualifying with a 1,103, with a high game of 211 and a pair of 199s
She fell in the round of 16 to Ishpeming’s Kaytlynne Carlson, 407-299 (202-205, 138-161).
The area’s other girls qualifiers were Gaylord’s Alysha Sobeck and Cheboygan’s Karlie Hall and Brenna Duffiney.
In boys, the area was also represented by state qualifiers Jon Tuck and Brett Bultsma and Cheboygan’s Cory St. Clair.
