Chatfield signs with Olivet Nazarene

BURT LAKE — All-State senior Aaron Chatfield signed his national letter of intent on Thursday to play soccer at Olivet Nazarene University.

The Burt Lake NMCA star set state records for goals and scoring.

He will be joined on the roster by his brother Paul, who is transferring from Northland International University.

Polanco agrees to deal with Marlins

MIAMI — Third baseman Placido Polanco has agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Miami Marlins.

The 37-year-old battled injuries and hit .257 with two home runs and 19 RBIs in 90 games with the Phillies. The deal, which includes $250,000 in performance bonuses, solidifies the Marlins' lineup following a payroll purge.

NYC Marathon runners can get refund

NEW YORK — New York City Marathon runners can receive a refund of their entry fee after this year's race was canceled because of Superstorm Sandy. When the event was called off last month, officials said they had a no-refund policy. The race organizer told entrants Thursday that they had three options to choose from — one of them a refund.

Utah State promotes Wells to head coach

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah State has promoted offensive coordinator Matt Wells to replace Gary Anderson as head football coach.

Anderson has been hired at Wisconsin to replace Bret Bielema. The 39-year-old Wells played quarterback for the Aggies in the mid-1990s and has coached at the school for the past two seasons.
