TC West defeats Petoskey

PETOSKEY — Traverse City West made the Big North Conference race a lot more interesting.

Combined with TC Central's win over Cadillac, West's 35-12 defeat of Petoskey meant every BNC team now has at least one loss with two weeks left in what is now a wide-open race.

The Titans (4-3, 2-1 BNC) pounded out 252 rushing yards to Petoskey's 99 to give the Northmen (6-1, 2-1) their first setback of the season.

Ronnie Saunders led eight TC West runners with 50 yards and two touchdowns, with quarterback Brett Kenny adding 47 yards rushing and 112 passing.

West went up 14 in the second quarter after a Saunders 3-yard run and a Kenny 24-yard pass to Jake Fisher. Zac Shafer ran in the two-point conversion after Fisher's score. Petoskey answered with a Josh Daniel 19-yard score, but Fisher blocked the extra point and Dee Kirksey returned the ensuing kickoff to near midfield. Kirksey then finished off the drive with an 8-yard TD run to put the Titans up 21-6 heading into the locker room.

After a scoreless third quarter, Kenny found Keegan Field for an 18-yard scoring pass. The Northmen came back with a 55-yard Ky Lewis TD pass to Joe Robbins.

Fisher returned an onside kick to the Petoskey 6 and Saunder ran it in for a touchdown one play later for the final score.

Kenny was 7-for-10 passing, while the defense was led by Morgan Tolle (nine tackles), Kirksey (seven tackles, sack), Don Cizek (interception) and fumble recoveries by Zane Rusinowski and Andrew Shafer.
