Girls Basketball Roundup: Frankfort tops TCSF in Challenge

KALKASKA — Guards Pauline Lausten and Shayla Soto led Frankfort to a 42-38 girls basketball win over St. Francis in the Lake Michigan-Northwest Challenge here Friday night.

The Panthers (2-0) led 20-15 at half.

Lausten finished with 10 points and Soto eight points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Sarah Carney’s 13 points and 10 rebounds topped St. Francis (2-1). Anne Lyman contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Frankfort won the JV game 36-34 as Brooklyn Puccio scored 17 points and Chelsey Ely 14. Colleen LaBonte netted 13 for the Gladiators.

 

Boyne City 55

Suttons Bay 36

Rany McCune tossed in 20 points and Mallory Kavaszewski 13 as Boyne City defeated Suttons Bay 55-36 in the Lake Michigan-Northwest Challenge.

Delaney Kaufman’s 13 points and 11 rebounds led the Norse (0-2). Samara Slocombe added eight points and nine rebounds and Waskwane Stonefish five rebounds.

Suttons Bay travels to Northport on Tuesday.

 

Grayling 47

Mesick 29

Grayling’s pressure defense allowed the Vikings to take control midway through the second quarter of a 47-29 victory over Mesick in the Lake Michigan-NorthwestChallenge at Kalkaska High School.

The Vikings took the momentum behind their defense and never looked back. Cierra Prosser led all scorers with 16 points in the win. She also added 10 steals. Mesick (1-2) was led by Abby Trowbridge’s 12 points and 14 rebounds.

On Monday, Mesick is at Brethren while Grayling (2-0) is at Houghton Lake.

Grand Haven 44

TC Central 19

Two-time defending state champion Grand Haven jumped out to a 25-3 lead at half en route to a 44-19 non-league win over Traverse City Central.

“We forgot to get off the bus,” Central coach Heather Simpson said. “We played much better in the second half. It was a night and day difference. Now we have to put four quarters together.”

Eight Trojans scored in the game. Mikhalia Shepler and Eliza McCall led the defensive effort.

Grand Haven won the JV game 52-39. Mary Drake scored 11 points for Central.
