Prep Sports Roundup: TCW improves to 8-0 in Big North

WEST BRANCH — Traverse City West improved to 8-0 in Big North Conference play, sweeping Ogemaw Heights in a league match, 25-9, 25-10, 25-11.

The Titans were led by: Katie Placek (13 kills, eight digs); Matti Mokanyk (32 assists); Anna O’Hara (three aces, eight kills); Kimmy Cilbilinski (three aces, five kills, six digs); Olivia Bishop (five kills, four blocks); and Maria Savoie (three kills).

The West junior varsity also improved to 8-0 in league play with a win over Ogemaw, 25-18, 25-11, 25-13. Victoria Green (nine digs, two kills), Sarah Patten (three aces, four kills, two digs), McKenna Mattson (seven digs, three aces) and Emily Nunemaker (four aces, five kills, eight digs) led West’s cause.

West’s freshman team won its match in three games. No scores were available from that match.

TC Central 3

Alpena 0

Five-foot-5 exchange student Irene Pozzi had three kills, including the game-winner that sealed a 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 win for Traverse City Central over Alpena.

Other leaders for Central were: Kiley Kowal (10 kills); Devin Dotterrer (19 assists, four aces); Callie Bartkowiak (six aces, four kills, 12 assists); Sierra Frazier (six kills); and Carissa Bartkowiak (six kills).

TC Christian 2

Onekama 1

Traverse City Christian defeated Onekama in a non-league volleyball matchup, winning 25-12, 25-15, 21-25.

Leading the Sabres’ victory were: Mikayla Brett (five kills, one block, five digs and four aces); Maddie White (two kills, four digs, three aces and 100 percent serving); Aubrey Heersema (three kills, two digs, one ace and 11 assists); and Abryanna Cannon (four kills, two blocks, 1 ace).

Christian travels to the Suttons Bay Invitational on Saturday.


Kalkaska 7

Kingsley 5

Kingsley battled back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to force overtime, but Kalkaska outscored the Stags 3-1 in a shootout to take a 7-5 victory.

Patrick Acre had three goals to lead Kingsley (1-13-1), while Sam Porter had a goal and an assist in regulation, then had Kingsley’s shootout goal.

Caleb Wetherholt made 15 saves in goal for Kingsley, which faces Glen Lake today.
