Prep Sports Roundup: Central leads suspended BNC tourney

PETOSKEY — In order to win the Big North Conference tennis championship, Traverse City Central might have to sacrifice the Twin Bays Invitational.

The Trojans lead the BNC tournament with 14 wins after Thursday’s play was suspended due to darkness. Heavy rainfall forced several afternoon delays.

“We’re kind of in the driver’s seat, but everybody has matches they haven’t finished,” Central coach Larry Nykerk said.

Central won the dual meet portion of the season, which counts as one-half of the league crown. The season-ending tournament is the other 50 percent.

The tourney is scheduled to be completed Tuesday in Petoskey.

Central’s Twin Bays Invitational was scheduled for that day, but could be moved to the week of the state finals or maybe even scrapped if the teams involved can’t come to an agreement.

Traverse City West and Petoskey had eight wins each Thursday, with Cadillac at six and Alpena four.

The BNC tournament is scored on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis by flight, so wins alone don’t necessarily reflect the actual standings, since none of the flight champions have been determined.

The Trojans, however, already have six flights in the finals — all four singles ones and two in doubles. Central had a 14-1 record on the day before play was called.

TC St. Francis 3

Charlevoix 0

Traverse City St. Francis finally was able to put away Charlevoix in Lake Michigan Conference action.

The Gladiators won the first two games 25-15 and 25-20 before an epically long third game went all the way to 31-29 on Senior Night.

Madeline Rysztak led the Glads with 11 kills, 11 digs and eight aces, while Haley Bussell (seven kills, 10 digs), Sophie Spencer (10 kills, seven digs) and Megan Knudsen (floor) were other top contributors to the win, which puts TCSF’s record at 22-8 overall and 5-0 in LMC play.
