Prep Sports Roundup: Kalkaska rallies to win

Second-half run sparks Petoskey past TC Central

KALKASKA — A slow start didn't deter Kalkaska Friday in a 44-40 Lake Michigan Conference win over visiting St. Francis.

The Blazers (9-3, 5-1 LMC) and Gladiators (11-2, 6-1 LMC) split their two meetings this year.

St. Francis led 21-8 at the end of the first quarter and had it up to 17 points in the second quarter. It was 27-18 at the half, but the Blazers led 35-30 going into the fourth.

"They have a heck of a team," Blazers coach Dave Dalton said. "We tightened our defense and the full-court pressure seemed to help us. Our kids are fighters. This is not the most talented team by any stretch of the imagination. We were down 18 at Boyne (and won). But this is a team with a lot of heart."

Kalkaska senior Kelli Guy finished the game with 22 points, six rebounds and five assists. She also hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to seal the four-point win.

The Blazers also had seven points and four rebounds from Tabitha Kibby while Elle Barber had five points, five rebounds and three steals.

Kaitlin Feeney had 13 points for the Glads while Liza Erickson had 12 points.

Kalkaska is at Charlevoix on Tuesday while St. Francis is at Boyne City.

Petoskey      65 TC Central      20

Petoskey went on a 25-0 run in the third quarter for a 65-20 Big North Conference win over host TC Central.

Kelsey Ance and Megan Tompkins combined for 17 of the Northmen points in the run. Ance finished with 20 points while Tompkins had 12 and Alyssa VanWerdan 13 for Petoskey (13-2, 8-1 BNC).

Abby Underwood led the Trojans (2-10) with five points.

Petoskey took the JV contest 39-33. Carrie Wynkoop had six points for the Trojans.

TC Central's freshmen won 55-19 as Jennifer Rose scored 12 and Haven Hill added 10 points.

Cadillac      41 TC West      30

Cadillac stayed tied atop the Big North Conference standings in the loss column with a 41-30 win over TC West.

The Vikings (11-2, 6-1 BNC) are tied with Petoskey while the Titans (5-9, 5-2 BNC) fell a game back.

TC West had a good defensive game, but struggled shooting. Katie Placek led the way with six points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Cadillac had 13 points from Abbey Fuller while Selena Golnik had 10 points.

In the JV game, the Vikings won 45-24. Jodi Turnquist had eight points and six rebounds in the loss. TC West's freshmen won 39-25 as Makenna Mattson had 24 points.
