---- — Townsend’s United debut on national TV

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D.C. United, featuring Traverse City West grad Casey Townsend, will kick off its season tonight against the Houston Dynamo.

The 8 p.m. contest will be televised on the NBC Sports Network (Charter channel 21 in Traverse City).

A first-round draft pick a year ago, Townsend was traded to D.C. United from Chivas USA this off-season.

Central’s Hornburg honored by MHSAA

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central senior Kalvis Hornburg has been selected as one of 13 Class A student-athletes to receive a Scholar-Athlete Award.

Hornburg captured all-state honors in skiing as a junior, finishing second in the slalom. Was team most valuable as a junior and team captain this year. Won all-conference honors three time en route to helping ski team to state titles as a freshman and sophomore.

He’s also a team captain in soccer, won all-academic honors on three occasions and is on the track team.

Hornburg’s extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, choir and advanced Science, Math and Technology Program, as well as being selected Homecoming King.

Swimmers qualify for Jr. Olympics

EAST GRAND RAPIDS — Mady McLean, Avery McLean, and Leah Timmer — members of the the Traverse City Breakers — qualified for the Junior Olympics in the 500-yard freestyle.

The three qualified in the West Division district championships last weekend. The three swam the 500-yard freestyle for the first time. Their times: Mady McLean, 7:04; Leah Timmer, 7:17; Avery McLean, 7:28. Mady and Avery are 9, Leah, 8. The qualifying time in the 10-under division was 7:42.89. Mady McLean earned another Junior Olympic berth after winning the 200-yard freestyle.

Athena Gillespie made her first Junior Olympic cut in the 100-yard breaststroke with a fourth-place finish.

A number of Breaker swimmers achieving their best times: Noemie Berube, Grey Carlson, Campbell Domes, Katie Gronek, Erin Hagerty, McKenna Kluzak, Audree Martin, Eamonn McGonigle , Mady, Finn Ritchie, Logan Sheard, and Wren Wodek. Sheard broke his own club record in the 50-yard butterfly.

Travel volleyball tryouts slated

GAYLORD — Tryouts for the Northern Michigan Travel Volleyball Club for U14 and U16 will be held March 8-9 at Gaylord High School.

AAU basketball teams forming

TRAVERSE CITY — AAU travel basketball teams are forming for the spring season.

A local girls 16 and under team, the Northwest Hoops, will be conducting tryouts soon. Girls interested in trying out should contact Jim Barbera at 941-4314 or 499-2337.
