College Notes: Zimmerman has big week for Wayne State

DETROIT — Wayne State first baseman/pitcher Kyle Zimmerman had a big week at the plate, going 7-for-20 with six runs batted in as the Warriors went 6-0. Zimmerman was the winning pitcher in one of the games, an 18-4 victory over Hillsdale. In that game Zimmerman (5-2) worked five innings, allowing only three hits. At the plate in that game he was 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Albion: Sophomore pitcher Gunnar Owens (Johannesburg-Lewiston) earned his fourth save of the year with an inning of work in relief in the Britons’ 4-1 victory over Calvin. ... Craig Conway (Mancelona) took the loss in Albion’s 5-3 loss to Calvin. Conway threw 7.1 innings, allowing five hits, striking out five and walking two.

Davenport: Ryan Manning (Suttons Bay) led Davenport with four hits, including a triple, and scored four times in a 19-3 win over Trine.

Delta College: Shortstop Zak Kruskie (Pellston) was 1-for-3 and scored a run in the Pioneers’ 4-1 victory over Lake Michigan College.

Madonna: Travis Schuba (Kalkaska) went to 5-1 on the season after a 5-1 victory over Lourdes. Schuba pitched a complete game, allowing six hits, one run and striking out three.

Michigan State: Walter Borkovich (TC West) took the loss in the Spartans’ 10-1 setback against Central Michigan. Borkovich (1-1) started and went the first 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and four runs — three of which were earned.

Northwood: Zac Zoellner (TC Central) scored a run in a 5-2 loss to Hillsdale.

Olivet: Jake Ball (Cadillac) was the winning pitcher in a 1-0 victory over Trine. Ball (2-3) threw a four-hitter, striking out four in seven innings. Ball also came on in relief , allowing one hit, one run and striking out one, in a 10-0 loss to Aquinas.

Siena Heights: Tayler Thelen (Cadillac) suffered the loss in a 7-4 loss to Indiana Tech. Thelen (2-1) worked 4.1 innings, walking three, allowing four hits and five runs and fanning three. He also pitched one inning and walked one in the Saints’ 15-9 loss to Eastern Michigan.
