Julie Rapson’s first half goal lifted Traverse City West to a 1-0 season-opening win over Gaylord in a Big North Conference soccer match.

Chloe Slack drew the assist. Maggie Troost had seven saves in goal. West had 12 shots in the match.

“I’m happy to get the win,” coach Lauran Pinto said. “This game exposed some weaknesses, but the girls played hard and worked through those weak areas to come out on top.”

The Titans just started practicing outside this week.

“We’re still a bit rusty,” Pinto said.

The Titans host Cadillac Saturday afternoon at the Coast Guard field.

Gaylord won the JV match 2-0.

Kalina Pfannenstiel scored off a Kendall Minor assist with 9:10 left in the first half as Traverse City Central edged Petoskey 1-0 in a Big North Conference soccer match.

“We certainly took a step forward from what we saw Tuesday (in a loss to Gaylord),” Central coach Janna Deering said. “We have to work on finishing, getting more shots in the back of the net.”

Freshman Abby Weckler had two saves in her first career start.

Central (1-1) travels to Midland on Saturday.

Brittney Collins scored a hat trick to propel Central to a 3-0 JV win. Greta Groothuis, Isabell Wejrowski and Maitland Adams drew assists, while Stevie Herbers was in goal and Megan Puckett and Katie Ferguson led the defensive effort for the Trojans (1-1).
