IRON RIVER — Traverse City St. Francis’ season came to an end in the Upper Peninsula.
West Iron County (10-0) rung up a 21-7 Division 7 playoff victory.
The Gladiators hadn’t lost a playoff game to a U.P. team since a 2006 setback against Norway in the regional finals.
The game was knotted up 0-0 at halftime.
Then Wykons quarterback Andrew Peterson took over.
Peterson ran for scores of 73, 5 and 1 yards en route to 170 yards on the ground.
Adam Armour and Byron Bullough each picked off Peterson, who was 3 for 9 passing for 85 yards. But Peterson’s main contributions were on the ground, not the air.
He ran 11 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 15.5 yards a carry. On defense, he had two sacks and four tackles for loss. Alec Schmelebec added 20 rushes for 156 yards.
West Iron County outgained the Gladiators 431-253 — including a 346-141 advantage in rushing yards.
Joe Studzinski led the Glads (5-5) in rushing with 63 yards and Bullough added 42 and another 51 on passes. Parker Guss threw for 89 yards and ran in a 1-yard fourth-quarter touchdown for St. Francis’ only score. Joe Trucco had 40 yards on two catches and Matt Seybert 21 yards on two grabs.
Defensively, the Glads were led by Bullough’s eight tackles.
