Prep Roundup: Titans clinch share of volleyball title

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West clinched a share of the Big North Conference volleyball championship Monday with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 win over Alpena.

The Titans are now 10-0 in the league and can win the title outright Wednesday at Petoskey.

West, now 31-8-1 overall, was led by Katie Placek (13 kills, three blocks, nine digs), Matti Mokanyk (five aces, 32 assists, eight digs), Anna O’Hara (13 kills), Ally Peters (12 digs), Kimmy Bilinski (five kills) and Olivia Bishop (five kills).

The West JV raised its Big North record to 9-1 with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 win over the Wildcats. Emily Nunemaker (two aces, 12 kills, 11 digs), Emma VanderMuelen (eight kills, 29 assists, five digs), Lexi Peters (11 kills, one block, two digs) and Victoria Green (20 digs) paced the Titans.

After a slow start, Traverse City Central was able to come away with a victory on senior night, topping Gaylord in four games, 19-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-17.

Leading the Trojans to their victory were: Carissa Bartkowiak (7 kills), Kiley Kowal (15 kills), Jessie Kuchner (13 kills, 3 aces), Callie Bartkowiak (3 kills, 9 aces) and Devin Dotterrer (47 assists).

The Trojans (22-12-2, 7-4 Big North) close out their conference and home schedule on Wednesday against Ogemaw Heights.

Bellaire girls win Class D championship

The Bellaire girls, led by Isabella Tremonti’s second-place finish, won the Michigan Class D Cross Country Coaches Association championship Saturday.

The Eagles edged Capital Homeschool 99-101 for the title. Buckley was fifth with 174.

Isabella Tremonti finished in 19:14.4 and Grace Tremonti 15th in 20:34.3 to lead the Eagles. Buckley was paced by Kirsi Wildfong, 10th in 20:10.4, and Marlee Harris, 21st in 20:55.8.

Pellston’s Olivia Heimforth came in 20th (20:48.5), Central Lake’s Anastasia Bragg 27th (21:18.3), Wolverine’s Courtney Whittaker 28th (21:28.4) and Frankfort’s Isabelle Putney 29th (21:32.7).

Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart won the boys championship with 51 points. Frankfort was fifth with 245.

Area top finishers included: Ellsworth’s Winter Romeyn (8th in 17:11.3), Mesick’s Zack Workman (10th in 17:16.6), Onaway’s Joe Traynham (14th in 17:34), Boyne Falls’ Kory Skop (16th in 17:43.1), Pellston’s Hunter Kilpatrick (18th in 17:46.4) and Connor Kintz (19th in 17:50.9), Gaylord St. Mary’s Adam Makarewicz (21st in 17:52.7), Frankfort’s Tristan Rogers (17:54.2), Mesick’s Brennan Huff (23rd in 17:58.1) and Pellston’s Garrett Robinson (26th in 18:07.5).
