Raffle set to help local teenager
TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central High School alumni will conduct a fundraising raffle during Friday’s last home football game of the season to benefit local 14-year-old Abby Gross, who is fighting brain cancer.
The game is at 5 p.m. at Thirlby Field. Up for raffle: an official game ball and Trojan team helmet, each signed by players and coaches. Tickets will be on sale prior to kick-off and through the third quarter, with prizes awarded during the fourth quarter of the game. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. Raffle proceeds go to the Abby Gross Benefit Fund in care of Traverse City State Bank.

Swimmers set personal bests
ZEELAND — The Traverse City Breakers’ 10-under swimmers set personal bests over the weekend in the Boo Bash at the Zeeland Natatorium.
It was the first travel meet of the short course season and all swimmers swam personal bests. The Bronze and Silver group swimmers who participated were Campbell Domres, Erin Hagerty, Madison Marshall, Leah Timmer, Mally Ulatowski, Camryn Crosby and Claire Bongiorno.
An intrasquad meet is set for Friday at the Civic Center pool with the next away meet in Harbor Springs on Nov. 2.
The Traverse City Swim Club is a non-profit, parent-run organization. It is open to all youth, ages 5-18, that have a desire to learn the fundamentals of competitive swimming.

Hoops registrations now underway
TRAVERSE CITY — Registration is underway for basketball leagues at the YMCA.
The deadline for the boys league (grades 2-5) is Thursday. The deadline for the girls middle school league is Oct. 30. The six-week seasons run from Nov. 9 to Dec. 14. Teams are generally formed by school. Teams can have up to 12 players. Games will be played on Saturdays and will be officiated.

The deadline for the men’s adult winter league is Friday. Play begins the week of Nov. 3 and ends in March. Games will be played Sunday through Thursday evenings at area gyms. There will be a round-robin format with an end of season tournament.
