West wins volleyball showdown at Cadillac

From staff reports

CADILLAC — Traverse City West took control of the Big North Conference volleyball race Wednesday night with a 25-23, 26-24, 11-25, 23-25, 15-5 win at Cadillac.

The Titans improved to 9-0 in the league with three games remaining. Cadillac fell to 8-2.

West (30-8-1) let a big lead slip away in the fourth game of Wednesday’s match, but bounced back in game five.

Coach Emily Baumann’s message to her team before the deciding fifth game: “Let’s get it done.”

The Titans responded.

“In the fourth game we were up like 17 to 7 and they came back and ended up beating us,” Baumann said. “We got a little fire under our booty because we realized we weren’t playing very well.”

The Titans were led by Ali Peters (24 digs), Anna O’Hara (25 kills, eight digs), Katie Placek (21 kills, 26 digs), Kelsey Boudjalis (six kills, two aces, six digs), Kimmy Bilinski (nine digs), Matti Mokanyk (53 assists, six aces, eight digs) and Olivia Bishop (seven kills).

“Anna O’Hara played out of her mind,” Baumann said. “She was awesome in the front row.

“We were scrappy on defense. We had ups and downs, but we definitely took our energy up. Our middles played great, too. They definitely stepped up.”
