Eleven area basketball players were selected to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan all-state team.
Eight local boys and three girls were on the BCAM’s Best all-state teams, with numerous other honorable mention picks.
On the boys’ side, Cadillac’s Jalen Brooks was all-state in Class B, while East Jordan’s Noah Bacchus, Boyne City’s Ryan Carson and Corey Redman and Mancelona’s Brandon Dingman earned Class C spots and Boyne Falls’ Marcus Matelski, Bellaire’s Denny Hall and Traverse City Christian’s Kris Crosby were Class D selections.
Making the honorable mention list were Petoskey’s Joe LeBlanc, Manistee’s Alex Bialik, Grayling’s Tyler McClanahan, Traverse City St. Francis’ Byron Bullough, Elk Rapids’ Cole Walker, East Jordan’s Jordan Weber and Bear Lake’s Reilly Merrill.
For girls, McBain’s Meredith Hamlet made the team in Class C, while Frankfort’s Mackenna Kelly and Gaylord St. Mary’s Kari Borowiak were Class D picks.
Honorable mention selections included Traverse City West’s Kimmy Bilinksi and Kiley Kreple, Grayling’s Sammy Denno, Manistee’s Annie Fuller, Kingsley’s Autumn Goggin, Benzie Central’s Sara Goodchild, Cheboygan’s Brooke Hancock, Manistee’s Emilee Kott and Audrey Tomaszewski, Glen Lake’s Kelly Bunek, Jessica Lee and Jordan Peplinski, Johannesburg-Lewiston’s Brittany Cherwinski and Madison Showerman, Lake City’s Maggie Eising, Elk Rapids’ Bridget Hintz, Bellaire’s Leighten Koepke and Madalyn Balon, Bear Lake’s Emileigh Ferguson, McKaya Groenwald and Hannah Harrington, Suttons Bay’s Delaney Kaufman, Frankfort’s Pauline Lausten and Shayla Soto, Leland’s Caitlin McKee and Libby Munoz, Leland; Gaylord St. Mary’s Bekah Myler and Onaway’s Lexi Szymoniak.
KANSAS: Freshman Andrew Wiggins made official Monday what he’s been telling folks all along: He’s headed to the NBA after his only season with the Jayhawks. The 6-foot-8 forward was voted second-team All-America earlier in the day and is expected to go in the top three picks in the June draft.
