Frankfort rolls to title

TRAVERSE CITY — David Loney looked like a boxer after a tough fight.

He had one bandage over his right eye, one over his left.

But it was the 6-3 junior center and his Frankfort teammates who put the hurt on Wednesday night in the Class D regional basketball final at Traverse City Central.

Loney scored 28 points and pulled down 18 rebounds to spark the Panthers to a dominating 90-47 win over Au Gres — Frankfort’s second consecutive regional title, a first for the boys program in school history.

“This is a great feeling,” Loney said. “This is a special group of guys. It’s amazing to do this for our hometown.”

The Panthers (19-6) will now play Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in Tuesday’s quarterfinal at Cadillac. It was Sacred Heart that beat Frankfort in Tuesday’s girls’ quarterfinal at Cadillac.

“We have to avenge that,” Loney said.

Like Monday’s regional opener with Suttons Bay, the Panthers bolted to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

“We wanted to come out and hit them fast,” senior guard Connor Bradley said.

Bradley did his part. He scored 10 first-half points as Frankfort opened a 47-24 cushion at the break.

Senior guard Brandon Schaub enjoyed another big night, too. He finished with 19 points, this after a 26-point effort Monday.

The Panthers shot better than 60 percent.

“They’re really good,” Au Gres coach Gordie Ostrander said. “They shot lights out. The more we got behind the more we pressed on offense.

“I would compare them real favorably to Mio (Class C regional team). They run the floor, they defend and they rebound. And tonight they were making everything they threw up. We had a good season. They’re better than us.”

Loney, like in last year’s regional, was dominant. He scored 22 points in the first half, controlling the game at both ends — despite a bandaged forehead after taking an inadvertent elbow to the head.
