Weber receives scholarship

PLYMOUTH — Traverse City Christian’s Daniel Weber, captain of the Record-Eagle All-Region soccer team, has received a Michigan State Youth Soccer Association college scholarship.

The scholarship was awarded at the annual awards ceremony on Friday in Detroit.

Weber currently plays for the NorthStorm soccer club in the Michigan State Premier Soccer Program. He has a 4.0 grade point average, and plans to study biology at the University of Michigan. Weber is a two-year member of the National Honor Society as well.

He’s been involved in several extracurricular programs, including basketball, marching band, Key Club, student government, and prom committee. Additionally, he’s helped the elderly maintain their yards, worked with elementary school children on a play, worked with Glad Meals to provide free meals to the homeless, and helped clean-up and set-up soccer fields at the TBAYS soccer complex. Weber has been a referee the past four years, and earned an award for the best youth referee in 2010 from TBAYS.

Bellaire’s Emery commits to Albion

BELLAIRE — Bellaire’s Drew Emery has committed to play college soccer at Albion.

Emery was a four-year starter for the Eagles, who made a run to the Division IV soccer finals in the fall. Emery finished his high school career with 40 goals and 72 assists. The assist total places him eighth all-time in the state record books.

Emery will major in business and will be playing for his previous Olympic Developmental Program (ODP) coach Jerry Block. Emery currently plays for Alliance Academy U18 Black (Grand Rapids) National League and will be in Las Vegas next weekend for the Player’s Showcase Tournament.

Girls hoops travel tryouts March 16

TRAVERSE CITY — Tryouts for the Northern Pride Sports Academy girls basketball travel teams will be held Sunday, March 16 at Bellaire High School.
