TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City West junior varsity won a state powerlifting championship Saturday at Whitmore Lake.
The Titans finished with 73 points. Port Huron was second with 67. West’s best finish previously was third.
“This is a big leap for us,” West coach Tim Wooer said.
The Titans had two individual state champions — Joe Leal at 123 and Skylar Dunkley at 242. Leal lifted a combined weight of 740 pounds, Dunkley 1165.
Each participant got three lifts in the squat, deadlift and bench press. They then took their best lift in each and added the total weight.
West had 15 of its 17 lifters place. Lifters had to place in the top three at regionals to qualify for states.
The Titans had two second-place finishers — Cam Hofstetter at 114 and Joe Hunter at 123.
Placing fifth were Jack Mikula at 207, Corbin Thompson at 220 and Larry Mikowski at 275. Taking sixth were Taylor McWethy at 123 and Dru Hammer at 132. Jake Newhouse came in seventh at 145. Jack Bishop and Grant Ellison were eight at 165 and 194, respectively. Finishing ninth were Jack Gorokhovshiy at 145, Logan Trudeau at 194 and Trent Kulbusz at 220.
In the varsity competition, Robert Hunter was second at 165.
