TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums scored twice in the ninth inning to take their second straight from the Rockford Aviators in Frontier League play Saturday at Wuerfel Park.
Trailing 1-0 entering the ninth, the Beach Bums didn’t need all three of their outs to post a 2-1 victory.
Matt Howard singled in Taylor Wrenn with one out, and Marcus Nidiffer came in on a Ryan Still fielder’s choice. Howard was out at second, but the speedy Still beat out Ted Obregon’s throw to first and Nidiffer came across with the winning run.
Burny Mitchem only lasted three innings despite not giving up a hit. He walked three, gave up three hits and struck out two. Mike Devine came on in relief for five innings of three-hit work, walking two and whiffing two. Nick Capito struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth to set up the Bums’ ninth-inning dramatics and earn the victory.
Rockford’s Kenny Bryant scored on a passed ball in the sixth for the game’s first run.
No Beach Bums player had more than one hit, although Still walked two more times to give him 11 in eight games. That total is second only to River City outfielder Eric Williams’ 14.
Nick Cicio (0-1) took the loss. Rockford starter Seafth Howe pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball, striking out 10.
Jake Sabol takes the mound for Traverse City (4-4) in tonight’s 5 p.m. series finale against the Aviators (1-7).
