Titans rally to beat Big Rapids, 5-3

From staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY — Down 2-0 in the first period, Traverse City West rallied for a 5-3 non-league hockey win over Big Rapids on Saturday.

“We controlled a lot of the play,” West coach Jeremy Rintala said. “But the chances we gave up were great chances for them.”

The Titans outshot the Cardinals 36-16.

Big Rapids scored two power-play goals in less than a two-minute span in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. West got on the board before the period ended when Mike Lake converted off assists from Jake Saxton and Nick Schultz.

The Titans tied it in the second period on a John Linenger tally. Saxton and Brent Petrosky assisted.

Big Rapids snapped the deadlock in the third period, scoring a short-handed goal when the Titans had a two-man advantage. The lead was shortlived as West came back to tie it just 15 seconds later on a Jacob Benker power-play goal, set up by Schultz.

Three minutes later, Ryan Roehler scored what proved to be the game-winner off assists from Ryan Fernandez and Jordan Stevenson.

Big Rapids had a power play the last 90 seconds, but Linenger came up with a short-handed goal with assists to Saxton and Roehler to end it.

Goalie Tyler Buchanan finished with 13 saves for the Titans (4-8), who travel to Cadillac on Wednesday.

“We’ve struggled to score goals this season so getting five was nice,” Rintala said.
