Julia Otwell on academic team

EAST LANSING — Traverse City’s Julia Otwell, a redshirt sophomore at Michigan State, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District second team.

Otwell represents the Spartans on the District 4 women’s track & field/cross country team.

The former Central standout is majoring in biosystems engineering with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.82. Otwell is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a key contributor to MSU’s track and field and cross country teams. She placed eighth overall in her first-career 10,000-meter run at the recent Big Ten Outdoor Championships.

Otwell also earned her second-straight individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honor for the cross country season, becoming only the third Spartan in school history to be awarded back-to-back recognition. She represented MSU at the 2012 NCAA cross country championships in the 6,000-meter race and posted a top-25 finish at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing.

TRAVERSE CITY — The annual Cherry-Roubaix charity ride, slated for June 15, has been canceled.

The ride out Old Mission Peninsula benefits the Munson Healthcare Women’s Cancer Fund.

Cherry-Roubaix race officials expect the ride to return next year. A decrease in sponsorships contributed to the cancellation.

The remainder of the Cherry-Roubaix races and family events will go on, starting Friday, June 14, and concluding Sunday, June 16.
