Nate Alger takes over TC Central softball

TRAVERSE CITY — Nate Alger is ready to meet his new team.

Alger will get the chance on Monday when he’s announced as the new varsity softball coach at Traverse City Central during a press conference at the school.

Having just been notified he got the job this week, and with little knowledge about the program he’s taking over, Alger is eager to see what kind of team he’s going to have when practice begins in about a month.

“The first line of business is I get to meet the players this coming Monday and start talking about interest, who is coming out for softball, who can make the early preseason activities, start looking at numbers,” said Alger, the undersheriff for Grand Traverse County. “I haven’t had a chance to meet the players and learn what they think are their strengths and weaknesses. I’d like to get an idea where they are strong and where they are not and work on those weaknesses and try to enhance those strengths so we can put a team together that is competitive in the Big North and beyond.”

Alger will be attempting to build a Trojan program that has historically struggled in the Big North.

“I hope any struggles they’ve had can be identified through player needs or fundamental skill development, and just work the girls and try to instill in them a lot of energy and a lot of passion for the game. Hopefully we can put some things together to be successful over the next few years,” he said. “I don’t know a lot about the history, but I have a lot of passion for the game and the Trojan spirit.”

Alger steps into his new spot without any varsity softball head coaching experience, but he does have experience coaching the sport. He was a softball coach with the Kingsley Recreation League as well as a middle school and junior varsity coach at Kingsley. He also has coached the TC Thunder 14U and 12U travel teams.
