TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central scored 14 seconds into the game Friday night en route to a 6-3 win over Midland in the Scott Miller Holiday Invite at Centre ICE.
Jordan Runkel netted that goal on the first shift off an assist from Derek Schrank.
“We had good jump in the first period,” Central coach Chris Givens said. “We outshot them 17-4 in the period. It was a good turnaround from the last few games.”
Central added a second goal in the period with just 1.8 seconds left when Cam Givens netted the first of his three goals. That one was unassisted.
The Trojans put it away with four goals in the second period. Cooper Marshall scored off an assist from Buddy Rose and Andrew Froese. Givens notched the next two on the power play. Schrank drew assists on both. Alex Oliver and Rhys Adle also picked up assists. Parker Hebden added the final goal with Joe Videki assisting.
Jack Boyce had 13 saves in goal.
Central takes on Plymouth Salem at 3:15 today.
Plymouth Salem 5
TC West 2
Jason Newel scored three goals as Plymouth Salem rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Traverse City West 5-2 in the Scott Miller Holiday Invite at Centre ICE.
The Titans (3-6) opened the scoring about seven minutes into the first period on a Jacob Benker goal. That came off assists from Nick Schultz and Jake Saxton.
The score went to 2-0 when John Linenger scored on a back door play from Saxton.
Then Salem took charge, scoring two goals to end the period and two more in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Salem ended it with an empty-netter.
“The effort was OK for the most part,” West coach Jeremy Rintala said. “We’ve got to get over the hump, make some plays, be more defensively responsible.”
Saginaw Heritage 3
Bay Reps 2
Tyler Angers scored in overtime to give Saginaw Heritage a 3-2 win over the Bay Reps in the Scott Miller Holiday Invite at Centre ICE.
The Reps were down 2-1 in the second period when Andrew Dzierwa scored to tie the game. That was the last goal until overtime.
The Reps Chase Joppich tallied in the first period off an assist from Dzierwa.
Jay Jones had a strong game in goal for the Reps, who play at 1:15 today against Toledo St. Johns.
Midland Dow 50
TC West 36
After a 9-9 first quarter, Midland Dow pulled away for a 50-36 win over Traverse City West in the TC Classic.
Evan Marquardt paced the Chargers with 18 points.
Tristen Roman netted 16 to pace the Titans.
West JV improved to 5-0 with a 64-36 win. Josh Roman scored 13 points and Chase Grierson 11 for the Titans.
TC Central 47
Vajas Grazulis tossed in 14 points and Andrew Nyquist 13 as Marquette rallied to beat Traverse City Central 55-47 in the TC Classic.
The Trojans led by three at half.
Jackson Schrameyer netted 15 points and Nate Schlusler 11 for the Trojans, who play at 1 p.m. today against Midland Dow.
Marquette won the JV game 41-36. James Brumfield had 13 points and Devante Walker 10 for Central.
Houghton Lake 38
Stacy Almquist scored 21 points as Kingsley defeated Houghton Lake 52-38 in the first round of the Kingsley Holiday Tournament.
Eight of the Stags nine players scored.
Tyler Sluck netted 14 and Joe Stiles 10 for Houghton Lake.
Kingsley (1-2) led 30-20 at half. Kingsley lost Jarid Lueck to injury in the second quarter.
The Stags will play Cheboygan at 5:15 today for the title.
Ben Pearson and Luke Harrington accounted for 52 points in Cheboygan’s 67-36 win over Kalkaska in the Kingsley Holiday Tournament.
Pearson finished with 31, Harrington 21.
Joe Duncan tossed in 31 points as Cedarville handed Frankfort its first loss, 60-53.
Cedarville led 33-24 at half.
David Loney paced Frankfort (2-1) with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Midland Dow 32
TC West 12
Midland Dow pulled away in the third quarter for a 32-12 win over Traverse City West in the TC Classic.
The Titans were playing without leading scorer Kiley Kreple (injured) and Paris Wagner (sick).
Dow outscored West 11-2 in the third quarter to stretch a 16-7 lead to 27-9.
Jenna Queary scored 10 for Dow. Mikaela Ray had seven for West. Kelsey Boudjalis pulled down five rebounds.
Dow won the JV game 41-21. Kalyn Havens scored four points for West.
West plays Marquette at 2:30 today.
TC Central 27
Marquette bolted to a 26-5 lead after the first quarter en route to a 69-27 win over Traverse City Central in the TC Classic.
Hunter Viitala scored 21 points, Madalyne Connon 11 and Elizabeth Kurin 10 for Marquette, now 9-0.
Callie Bartkowiak netted seven points and Eliza McCall four for the Trojans.
Marquette won the JV game 69-39 to also improve to 9-0. Amber Hubener tallied 19 points, Terese Lehy 17 and Kayce Mullett 10 for the Redettes. Abby Green scored 16 points and Emily Jenkins 12 for the Trojans.
St. Joe Lutheran 44
Junior Shayla Soto scored a career-high 22 points as Frankfort defeated St. Joe Lutheran 57-44 at Davenport College.
The Panthers (7-0) led 26-18 at half.
Soto also finished with four rebounds and two steals. Freshman Cecelia Schmidt contributed 10 points and four assists while Pauline Lausten and Mackenna Kelly chipped in nine points. Kelly also had four assists and Lausten four steals.
