Prep roundup: Reps edge Salem, 1-0

From staff reports

TRAVERSE CITY — Travis Kirk scored on a power play about two minutes into the third period Thursday night to give the Bay Reps a 1-0 win over Plymouth Salem in the Scott Miller Holiday Hockey Invite at Centre ICE.

Zack Bargy and Trevor Apsey drew assists on Kirk’s goal.

“After not scoring at all last weekend (in losses to Sault Ste. Marie and Grosse Pointe South), it felt good to get a goal,” Reps coach Todd Spaulding said.

Jay Jones made the tally stand up, stopping 25 shots on goal.

The Reps improved to 3-4 and will face Saginaw Heritage at 5:15 today. Heritage edged West 1-0.

The first period proved costly for the Traverse City Central Trojans — again.

Grosse Pointe Liggett skated to a 3-0 first period lead en route to a 4-3 victory over the Trojans in the Scott Miller Holiday Hockey Invite at Centre ICE.

Just last Wednesday, Traverse City West jumped out to a 3-0 lead and beat Central 4-3.

“We dug ourselves a hole again,” Central coach Chris Givens said.

Liggett actually led 4-0 in the second period when Central started a comeback. The Trojans scored two goals in a 36-second time span. Andrew Froese netted the first goal off an assist from Cam Givens. Givens then connected off assists from Parker Hebden and Alex Oliver.

Central then made it a one-goal game as Oliver tallied off assists from Givens and Hebden with just over 13 minutes to play in the third period.

“We had lots of time, lots of chances,” Chris Givens said. “We just couldn’t get the last one.”

Central outshot Liggett 18-6 in the final period.

Overall, the Trojans had a 35-23 edge in shots.

“We had 12 shots in the first period,” Givens said. “It wasn’t like we were playing poorly. We just can’t keep digging ourselves holes like that.

“They’re a good team. They make you pay for mistakes.”

The loss dropped Central to 3-5-1.

The Trojans will take on Midland at 7:15 tonight at Centre ICE. Midland lost to Toledo St. Johns on Friday.
