BELLAIRE — Small ball is usually a baseball term.
Not any more.
Chase Small scored touchdowns three different ways as Bellaire (8-3) rolled to a 48-0 eight-player football playoff victory over Owendale-Gagetown, putting up all of its points by halftime and cruising the rest of the way.
Small found the end zone on a 70-yard fumble return, a 24-yard rush and a 23-yard interception return in the victory.
"Basically, Chase Small did it all for us," Bellaire coach Ron Bindi said. "And he's only a sophomore."
The victory is the first in regionals in Bellaire football history.
Hunter Walsh added TD runs of 42 and 4 yards and Wes Villafane caught touchdown passes of 32 and 56 yards from Zach Smith. Small, Walsh and Smith added a two-point conversion each.
Smith completed the only two passes he threw for touchdowns, going 2 for 2 for 88 yards. Small ran 10 times for 98 yards and Walsh had 11 carries for 65 yards.
Small also paced the defense with 16 tackles, while Walsh had 15, Jacob Campis 11 and Jordan Proctor picked off a pass.
The Eagles are hoping their defense will be as effective Saturday when they travel to play Rapid River (9-2) at 2 p.m. Bellaire was able to top the Rockets 28-16 this season.
"We have played outstanding defense the last three weeks," Bindi said. "Sixteen against Rapid River, six in the fourth quarter last week and zero this week."
