TRAVERSE CITY — Having already clinched the top spot in the Midwest Junior Hockey League standings, the Traverse City Hounds suffered an 8-2 loss to the Soo Firehawks on Saturday at Centre ICE Arena.
Andrew Holder scored twice to open the game for the Firehawks and Traverse City never got closer than one goal the rest of the way. Leading 3-2 early in the second period, Soo finished off the game by scoring five unanswered goals.
Nicholas Murphy had two of those goals and finished with a hat trick for the Firehawks. Steve Smoltz had two goals and Tyler Jones netted a power play goal for the Firehawks.
Tyler Thirlby had the first Hounds goal at the 10:41 mark of the first period and Kevin Milosar scored one minute into the second for Traverse City (32-4-1-2). Traverse City’s assists went to Matthew Passino, Premysl Synek, Josh Smith and Vaughn Clouston.
Anthony Benvenuti made 28 saves in goal for Soo (27-10-0-1), which also has clinched a playoff spot in the MWJHL. Bryce Goulah made 21 saves for Traverse City.
The Hounds are off until next Saturday when they travel to play the Detroit Fighting Irish for the final two games of the regular season.
