SUTTONS BAY — The Suttons Bay boys basketball team captured its first league title since 2010 when it pulled out a 65-53 victory over Glen Lake on Thursday at Suttons Bay High School.
The Norsemen needed the victory to guarantee an outright championship after Frankfort defeated Buckley. Suttons Bay (16-4, 12-2 Northwest) finished one game ahead of Frankfort in the league standings. Glen Lake finished in third place, three games off the pace.
“It feels great. I’m happy about winning the conference after not being one of the pre-season favorites,” said Suttons Bay head coach Ron Anderson. “It was a huge win for us and a huge accomplishment.”
Logan Mikesell led the Norsemen with 17 points and Aaron Orban added 16 points. Travis Wiltjer and Travis Moore each had 13 points for Glen Lake (12-8, 9-5).
The game was tied 14-14 at the end of the first quarter, but Suttons Bay took control in the second quarter and had a 30-21 lead going into the half. The Norsemen were in front 47-38 after the third period and they cruised the rest of the way.
“Our defense took over, we started to rebound a little more and made a couple of shots,” said Anderson.
The Norsemen start tournament play on Wednesday against the winner of the Grand Traverse Academy-Traverse City Christian game.
