West wins epic 7 OT thriller over Reps

TRAVERSE CITY — It was epic. It was fantastic. It was long.

Seriously, long.

As in looooooong.

By the time Erik Anton’s slap shot found the twine Monday night to give Traverse City West a 2-1 seven-overtime victory over the Bay Reps in a Division 1 regional hockey game at Howe Arena, officials at the game were considering when to end it and resume today.

The game started at 7 p.m. and ended at 11:13 p.m.

Senior Nick Schultz was able to tap a turnover into a pass to Anton, who fired his shot from the top of the right circle and high into the net with 3:27 left in the seventh eight-minute overtime session.

After the fourth overtime, the teams had to go 4-on-4, according to MHSAA rules.

The first pair of eight-minute overtimes featured a lot of hits, but not many serious scoring opportunities. West had six shots over that span to the Reps’ three.

Through four OTs, West had a 34-20 advantage in shots, including 10-2 combined in the third and fourth extra sessions. The Titans ended up with a 50-31 advantage.

Garrett Diola knotted the game with a goal from a sharp angle that found its way through the pads of Brendan Lacharite 1:01 into the third.

Caleb Breithaupt put West on top 1-0 with a first-period slap shot to the far post with 5:30 left. Jacob Benker drew an assist on the goal.

Jay Jones made 48 saves for the Reps, while Lacharite stopped 30 shots.
