MOUNT PLEASANT — Traverse City Central won a state championship on Saturday.
Well, sort of on the Central part. Definitely the state crown bit.
The Snow Dogs Track Club — comprised entirely of TC Central athletes — won the distance medley relay at the Mid-State Indoor Championships at Central Michigan University.
The medley relay team qualified 12th for the state finals, but that was without senior Kyle Dotterrer, who ran the first 1,200-meter leg.
“We knew we would be better than 12th, but not sure how much,” said junior Chris Brower, who ran the third leg of 800 meters.
Dotterrer had the TC team in second by the end of his leg, and after his 400-meter leg, junior Cam McAuliffe handed off to Brower, who gave the Snow Dogs about a 20-meter lead on the closest team.
“By that time, we had a good lead building on the second-place guys,” Berry said. “I had to give it my all to seal the deal.”
The quartet ended up winning by more than nine seconds, lapping several other teams in the process.
“Anthony Berry crushed it,” Brower said.
TC West’s Tommy Roush won the discus title and was fourth in the shot put.
Central’s Johnny Piatek was third in the shot put with a throw of 53’11”.
Three of Trojan athletes placed in their events. Alex Liggett was sixth in the 60 hurdles in 8.32 seconds, Aaron Taylor claimed seventh in high jump, clearing 6’4” and Courtney Truss-Cadotte was fifth in the 60 dash in 8.15.
TC St. Francis 79
Byron Bullough’s 23 points led Traverse City St. Francis to a 79-55 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Kalkaska.
Dylan Sheehy added 14 points and Noah Phillips and Tanner Kenny each grabbed eight rebounds.
The Gladiators (7-10, 5-8 LMC) hit the road for three games next week, visiting Pine River on Monday, Glen Lake on Tuesday and Harbor Springs on Thursday.
