Prep Basketball Roundup: Frankfort girls clinch title

FRANKFORT — A freshman and a foreign-exchange student led Frankfort to a league-clinching 46-37 girls basketball victory over Glen Lake.

The Panthers (17-1, 12-0 Northwest Conference) locked up the league title Thursday by handing the Lakers their third conference setback.

Denmark’s Pauline Lausten scored 13 points for Frankfort, while freshman Cecilia Schmitt had nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

“She was the difference,” Panthers coach Tim Reznich said. “We struggled hitting shots. Cecilia came in and went 4 for 6 from the field. It was really big for us.”

Jessica Lee scored a game-high 15 points for Glen Lake and Jordan Peplinski had eight. The Lakers (11-6, 8-3 NWC) host Suttons Bay on Monday.

“We battled every minute,” Reznich said. “It was a very good game.”

The Panthers travel to Kingsley on Tuesday and to Buckley on Thursday to close out the league schedule.

Buckley 43

Kingsley’s first two points of its Senior Night win over Buckley were likely Kenzie Meeker’s last.

The all-conference Stags player tore her anterior cruciate ligament in the off-season and hasn’t played a single game in her senior campaign.

She started Thursday.

The Stags allowed Buckley to score on their first possession and then fed Meeker for a shot. She missed, grabbed her own rebound and put it back.

Meeker hasn’t officially been cleared by doctors to play, and coach Matt Shelleck said she isn’t likely to play the rest of the year.

Autumn Goggin scored 27 points and added five rebounds and four steals, while Lilly Travis had 12 points and six boards in the win.

Marlee Harris scored 14, Hannah Baldinger added 11 points and seven assists and Ashlee Carpenter scored 11 points for Buckley, which travels Tuesday to Leland.

Kingsley (13-5, 9-3 NWC) hosts Frankfort on Tuesday and travels Thursday to Mesick.
